New Community Project (Vine & Fig)

In between working in the school garden with local middle school students, New Community Project (locally known as Vine & Fig) received a website update and a logo revamp.

School Garden

During my time working with Vine & Fig, I had the opportunity to work at a local middle school garden, created storytelling-based workshops, and help revamp the school’s website. I also coordinated with the Harrisonburg United Way to welcome volunteers during their annual Day of Caring event.

Along with the school, I also revamped Vine & Fig’s website and logo. The partners wanted a logo that was illustrative, and I gained inspiration from one of the partner’s artistic paintings around their Sustainable Living Center gardens.

A Noteable Side Project:

I also worked with Vine & Fig’s lead coordinating partner Tom Benevento (center) as a volunteer researcher, writer, and co-presenter on the Virginia Environmental Justice Council in 2018. He spoke about being on the council while visiting my introductory graduate seminar. I was delighted when he let me join him and then-undergraduate student James Stearman (left) on the project.

We proposed creating a state-wide recycle and composting system similar to the successful program in Vermont. While the council was disbanded shortly after, the members showed enthusiasm and had started to explore possibilities.
